Community Hero Award 2000

Audrey Farnell

Audrey Farnell typifies those unique people across the county that give unstinting voluntary service to benefit others.

For more than forty years Audrey has been the treasurer of the Polio Fellowship in Halifax and took on the additional role of Yorkshire treasurer 20 years ago.

As a talented javelin thrower she won medals at regional level and through her love of sport she became a long standing member of the Fellowships national executive helping co run its annual national games. For the last seven years she has organised accommodation for participants as well recording results at the event.

As a member of the Yorkshire region Disability Sport England committee, she helped to set up, and became the treasurer of, the Federation of Disability Sport (Yorkshire and Humberside) – the first organisation to represent the sporting interests of all the disability groups.

Audrey also chairs both the Halifax branches of Coalition of Disabled People and Shopmobility, a scheme to make shopping easier in the town centre for people with mobility difficulties.

And if that is not enough Audrey still finds time to audit the books of her local youth club to save the cost of an auditor.
