Sporting Achievement Award 2015

Joe Root

The award was presented to Steve Denison Chairman of Yorkshire County Cricket Club on behalf of Joe Root by Nick Rudge, Managing Director of Yorkshire Cottages.

A glorious couple of years culminated in Joe Root helping England win the Ashes and becoming the leading batsman in the ICC World Rankings in the space of a few hours in August.

The Sheffield-born batsman is the sixth England player to top the batting or bowling rankings since 1980.

Still only 24, Joe, named ECB Cricketer of the Year in May, has firmly established himself as one of England’s key performers, and is already closing on 3,000 Test runs with an average of 54.66, less than three years after his debut.

Two tons in the series victory over Australia took him to eight Test centuries and he has also proved a dominant performer in white-ball cricket, underlining his batting quality with two centuries in the ODI series win over New Zealand earlier this summer.

The worrying thing for the world’s bowlers is that Joe’s best years are still ahead of him.
