Richard Whiteley Award 2014
Judy Bell MBE
Presented by Kathryn Apanowicz.
Judy Bell MBE is the Chairwoman of her family-run business Shepherds Purse Cheeses, having handed over the daily reins to her two daughters Katie and Caroline last year. Judy founded Shepherds Purse in 1989 as part of a diversification scheme on the family farm in North Yorkshire, which initially filled a niche in the market to provide sheep’s milk products. Today Shepherds Purse has a much loved range of artisan sheep and cow’s milk cheeses which are available in major national multiples, specialist cheese shops and enjoyed in restaurants across the UK and beyond. Judy is now also now Chairwoman of Deliciously Yorkshire, the food group she credited with helping her as she built Shepherds Purse, supporting and promoting food and drink producers across Yorkshire. She received an MBE in 2002 for her voluntary work and services to the farming community in North Yorkshire.
