Sharon Watson

After training at the London School of Contemporary Dance, Sharon Watson spent years dancing, choreographing and lecturing before being appointed as the seventh Artistic Director of Phoenix Dance Theatre in May 2009.

Sharon’s work for Phoenix includes Shaded Limits, Never Still, Fast Lane, Melt, Repetition of Change and TearFall. In 1996, she choreographed a piece for the opening of the Royal Armouries and in 1998 formed her own company ABCD which has toured both nationally and internationally, focusing largely on working with live music. In 2011, in collaboration with the BBC, she choreographed Frankenstein’s Wedding Live in Leeds and in 2014, created scenes featured in the seven-part adaptation of Susanna Clarke’s novel Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell.

As one of the most influential people working in the arts, Sharon was recently appointed as independent chair of the steering committee, bidding for European Capital of Culture Leeds 2023, championing the pride of Leeds on the world stage.
